S. João da Pesqueira is a municipality consisting of the parishes of Castanheiro do Sul, Ervedosa do Douro, Espinhosa, Nagoselo do Douro, Paredes da Beira, Pereiros, Riodades, S. João da Pesqueira, Soutelo do Douro, Trevões, Vale de Figueira, Valongo dos Azeites, Várzeas and Vilarouco.
The Municipality of S. João da Pesqueira is in the heart of the Douro Demarcated Region. The main parish received the oldest charter of which there is memory.
In addition to the built heritage, S. João da Pesqueira stands out for its beautiful landscapes, with vineyards as the dominant brand. The almond trees in bloom brighten the winters and the municipality has as its root and identity the Douro River. The uniqueness of the landscapes is completed by picturesque villages, embedded in the slopes, next to the vineyards in the schist terraces.
S. João da Pesqueira is part of the Wine Route of Europe (GR14) and appears in the Douro as one of the most beautiful itineraries to know: Monuments, history, noblemen, vineyards, wine, wedges, imposing levels, almond blossom, archaeological finds, gastronomy art and much more.
As we can see later, the architectural, civil and religious heritage is vast, which marks eras, styles and tastes.
There is little left of traditional handicrafts, but it is still possible to find some old-fashioned tinkers, shoemakers and basket weavers.
Fairs and Pilgrimages The Feira do Senhora do Monte is one of the most representative and popular in the region. On September 1, the day of the annual fair, horse racing, livestock competition and bullfighting are held.
