Description Penedono

Penedono is a Portuguese village in the District of Viseu, North Region and Douro sub-region, with about 1 000 inhabitants.

It is the seat of a municipality with 133.72 km² in area and 2 952 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 7 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north and northwest by the municipality of São João da Pesqueira, to the east by Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Mêda, to the south by Trancoso (exclave of Guilheiro) and to the west by Sernancelhe.

Its castle of medieval origin based on a large rock is a unique example of military architecture and dominates the landscape of the region.

The vestiges of prehistoric occupation abound here, standing out nearby, in the village of Penela da Beira, the dolmen that served as the main chapel in the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte.

In the century. In the twentieth century, Penedono registered a great development when it began to explore its soil rich in ore (gold and wolfram), mines that are abandoned and are an example of industrial archeology.
