Description Carregal do Sal

The Municipality of Carregal do Sal is located in a large old massif of the Planalto Beirão, called Mondego platform, located between the Serra da Estrela and Caramulo, having as natural borders, to the North, the River Dão and, to the South, the River Mondego .

It extends over a territory without great elevations, with a projection of its gentle slopes towards the valleys of important river resources, in which the dense granitic patches characteristic of this region predominate.

Among this vast heritage, the Tomb of Knight Fernão Gomes de Góis, a masterpiece of the Renaissance, cannot be overlooked. its architectural heritage is well mirrored in its grand manor houses and manor houses of medieval genesis scattered throughout its parishes, where the granite constructions characteristic of this Beira region are very evident.

The festive traditions and pilgrimages in which we highlight the Carnival of Cabanas de Viriato characterized by the famous “Dança dos Cús” or “Dança Grande” that continues to bring to the Municipality thousands of revelers from different parts of our Portugal! And the traditional Festa da Sr.ª dos Milagres, which takes place annually on August 15 in Laceiras and which mobilizes thousands of people, especially emigrants! And the centuries-old tradition of Queima da Comadre and Compadre, in Alvarelhos!
