Peso da Régua is a municipality belonging to the district of Vila Real located next to the river Douro and is considered the Capital of the Demarcated Region of the Douro. This is because in 1756 Marquês de Pombal created the General Company of Vineyards of Alto Douro, ordering the production areas of the best wines to be delimited with granite landmarks, thus appearing the first demarcated wine region in the world.

The production of these wines led to the development of this region, passing the city of Régua to be the commercial center where the transport of the wine to the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia were carried out.

The origin of the name Peso da Régua has several theories but it is known that it results from the junction of the name of the two localities, Peso and Régua, that gave origin to the present locality.

The surrounding landscapes of this county have a unique beauty and are in the surroundings of the Alto Douro, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Régua is well known for its sweets, such as Falachas, Rebelos, Ferreirinhas, Regulas and the famous Rueda Sweets.
