Populated since prehistory, Montalegre is a county rich in historical heritage. The remains left by the Celts, such as the castro, and then those left by the Romans, such as bridges and roads, enrich the territory of Montalegre and make tourist attraction.
In order to safeguard the historical, natural, social and cultural heritage, the municipalities of Montalegre and Boticas have joined together and created a very ambitious project, the Barroso Ecomuseum, where you can see the ways of doing and the utensils used by your ancestors.
This is a new aspect of the museum, a museum that is not confined to a physical space and uses the territory itself for that purpose.
Its headquarters are located in the surroundings of the walls of the castle of Montalegre, containing a set of interpretive centers spread by some parishes of the county, such as Salto, Pitões das Júnias, Paredes do Rio, Tourém, Vilar de Perdizes and the most recent, in Fafião.
With regard to regional cuisine, Montalegre is famous for its sausages and ham, and the Fumeiro Fair, held every year in January, is the ideal occasion to buy some of these tasty delicacies.
