The Church of São Nicolau was profoundly altered in the 18th century.
Rua de Santo António 36
Mesão Frio
It is said to be a temple of Romanesque roots, but even the version that the primitive temple was founded by Queen Dona Mafalda, lacks documented testimonies that legitimize its antiquity. Many authors want to prove the antiquity of this temple by the thickness of its thick walls, but its architectural layout is a nineteenth-century reconstruction (in which part of the stones that belonged to the old church of Misericórdia were used).
Inside the Church of São Nicolau, in addition to the precious carving and rare objects of the sacred cult, the grave of D. Francisco Souto Maior Pinto, a nobleman who was Governor of Angola and captain-general, is embedded in the side wall facing the source. of Kingdom. On the opposite side of this tomb, an emblazoned chapel was built in 1595, in which the 'weapons' of António de Azeredo and Vasconcelos, its founder, were sculpted. The paintings in the sacristy are attributed to Manuel Arnau.
