The foundation of the Franciscan Convent, in Mesão Frio, does not have a precise date. Fortunato de Almeida, the renowned author of the «History of the Church of Portugal», says that “the Monastery of São Francisco de Mesão Frio was founded in 1724, for friars” and Frei Henrique Rema gives the year 1744 as a probable date of his function

It is very possible that the building to house the Franciscan friars began to be built in 1724 and that its completion would become a fact only 20 years later. Between one date and another, the Third Order of San Francisco appears, next to the church of the Convent, in whose direction the friars were formerly.
Inside the Cloister of the Convent, you can see some underground stairs that lead to a tunnel. The people created the legend that in this underground tunnel, there is a path through which the Moors crossed the Douro River, towards the Convento de Barrô, in the municipality of Resende.
Currently and since the year 1834, it is in this building that the various public offices of the judicial, administrative and municipal power of the municipality of Mesão Frio operate.
