The border situation of Vila Nova de Cerveira, expose it seriously to the dangers of war with neighboring Spain. However, to close the siege to any attempt to cross the Minho River, Fort Lovelhe was built.

The Fort is a product of military engineering at the time, it was built between 1660 and 1662 under the direction of Mestre de Campo General D. Francisco de Azevedo. It is a bastioned fortress, in the shape of a trapezoid and was prepared to resist the attempts of Iberian union advocated by the Philippine dynasty, but ended up providing other relevant services to the country, in the wars that followed, that is, in the War of Succession of Spain , in the Family Pact War and in the Peninsular War.
Their action was, however, much more relevant, during the French Invasions, by preventing the troops under the command of Soult from crossing the Minho River, in front of Vila Nova de Cerveira, on February 13, 1809. Source: https: //www.cm-vncerveira.pt/
