About 6 kilometers east of Vila Nova de Cerveira, at the end of the parishes of Loivo and Candemil, is the Convento de S. Paio. Its founder was the Franciscan Friar Gonçalo Marinho, who took advantage of the existence on the site of an ancient chapel dedicated to S. Paio, to build the convent in 1392. However, it was only in the 17th century that it acquired the structure that still remains today.

According to monastic law, the convent had a cloister, square, with five half-point arches; the cloister was landscaped with tall flowerbeds, having a fountain in the middle, a beautiful example that is found today in the Casa da Loureira, in Gondarém.
The archway gave access to the cells of the monastic house, the chapter room and the conventual church.
On the wall of the chancel a high deposit was placed with the remains of Mestre de Campo Francisco Soares Malheiro, Governor of Vila Nova de Cerveira.
The building ended up falling into ruins at the time of the extinction of religious orders in Portugal. The filling of the convent was looted or diverted to other spaces.
Currently, the convent has been restored by the current owner, the sculptor José Rodrigues, who took care to take care of a significant part of its primitive design and transformed it into an Art Center, with a very significant collection of Painting, Sculpture and Sacred Art.
The garden at Convento S. Paio is part of the Alto Minho Historical Gardens Tour, so visiting these green and artistic spaces is free during the period of operation (from Thursday to Sunday, between 2 pm and 6 pm). If the holidays are on those days, the convention is open (except for January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1 and December 25). Source: https://www.cm-vncerveira.pt/
