Vila Nova de Cerveira

Description

Of oval shape, measuring about 260 meters of perimeter, with the longest axis of 90 meters and the shortest of 65, the castle of Cerveira is defended by eight towers, square, of which five are against the curtain of the South, for being the one with the easiest attack. The walls are 7.50 meters high over 2 meters thick and the towers range from 8 to 13 meters of bombers. The barbican walls reach 6 meters with 1.50 of thickness, following the protrusion of the turrets.

It still preserves all the medieval wall armor, whose stones blackened by time show the marks of the 55 masons who renovated it at the end of the 15th century. Some doors remain intact, such as the access door and the one of appeal, usually called the door of treason, both of ogival type corresponding to the time of construction: the door of honor is that of the main tower (of the Moors or Menagem) and which was demolished halfway in 1844. On the dowels of its arches, D. Dinis's shields can still be seen.

The curtains between the protruding cubes denote work from various eras, as the mode of construction easily shows, with the grafting of the Joanine battery over the river, on the west side. Source: https://www.cm-vncerveira.pt/
