Sines is a Portuguese city in the Setúbal district, Alentejo region and Alentejo Litoral sub-region. It is the seat of a municipality with an area of ??203.30 km² and 14 238 inhabitants (2011 INE), subdivided into 2 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north and east by the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, to the south by Odemira and to the west it has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The municipality's coast, south of São Torpes, is part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina. It has the highest GDP per capita of all the municipalities in Portugal.
Former fishing village, it was changed by tourism and industry. It is currently a very important oil industrial port in the country's economy.
Over the bay, you can see the ruins of a medieval castle, restored in the century. XVI. It is said that it was here that Vasco da Gama (1468-1524) was born, son of the Mayor of Sines. In one of the castle's towers there is a museum center dedicated to the navigator.
In Sines you can also visit the Archaeological Museum, where archaeological remains found in the region are kept, proving their occupation in remote times.
