Located by the Tagus River, this town was donated in the century. XII by the King of Portugal to the Order of Santiago de Espada, which dominated a vast territory headed by the Castle of Palmela. For centuries it kept the name of Aldeia Galega, a name that was replaced only in 1930 by Montijo.
In the century. XVI, the population grew immensely due to the arrival of workers from different regions, to participate in the works that aimed to make the river navigable, contrary to its tendency to silt up. This work definitely marked the village and made possible the diversification of the local economy, which until then depended exclusively on fishing activity.
Like almost all the locations in Ribatejo, Montijo has great traditions of wild feast, with bullfights and bullfights being essential in the most characteristic festivities in the city, such as the São Pedro festivities that take place annually at the end of June.
