It was built by Philippe I, to supply the Convent of Christ. In 1593, Filipe Terzi started work and Pedro Fernandes Torres would complete them in 1613.

With 6 kilometers in length and 180 arches, it forms, in the most uneven section, the Vale de Pegões, two rows of overlapping arches in which the entire upper arch arches rests on the lower pointed arches.
