Description Cartaxo

Located about 10 km from Santarém, Cartaxo is a town of very ancient origin, which at the time of the Roman occupation was an important crossing point on the road that connected Lisbon to Santarém.

The countryside, the neighborhood and the lezíria, with the river at its feet, attribute to Cartaxo a great landscape richness. Vine culture and wine production have always been linked to the municipality, earning it the title of Wine Capital.

The municipality of Cartaxo has points of interest in its eight parishes. In addition to the natural landscape, of which the vineyards, the lezíria and the Tagus river stand out, the built heritage reveals a lot about the history of the places and the social experiences of other times.

From churches, chapels or fountains to rural farms, there are many places to discover in the municipality of Cartaxo.

The region that remains essentially agricultural, is known for its full-bodied red wine production, popularly known as "carrascão", and the whole tradition related to its production can be known at the Rural and Wine Museum and through the Wine Routes.

Very traditional in this area are the Harvest Festivals, as well as the Feira dos Santos, which takes place on the 1st of November and whose tradition goes back at least to the middle of the century. XVII.
