Description Abrantes

Located on a hillside next to the Tagus River, the city of Abrantes has always been an important place in terms of military strategy, since from its highest point it is possible to appreciate a vast panorama that covers a large part of the Tagus River, and extends through the Beira Baixa, Ribatejo and Alentejo.

Abrantes surprises for its beauty and harmony. It is a city known for its heritage, with an emphasis on the Historic Center and its monuments, squares and streets flanked by buildings of traditional architecture and also by the natural conditions of excellence that invite leisure and enjoyment of nature throughout the year.

It was precisely on this site that the Moors built a castle, which was won by D. Afonso Henriques, 1st king of Portugal, and donated to the Religious and Military Order of Santiago de Espada for defense and settlement.

In the century. XIX, this region was invaded by the Napoleonic troops that sacked it and they quartered here, remaining for about four years, until being expelled 4 years later, in a fight that counted on the heroic participation of the population and the help of British troops.

Nowadays, Abrantes is a quiet city, in which a walk through the streets of white houses is recommended, which were once considered the most flowery in the country, without missing the opportunity to taste the famous regional sweets made from eggs and sugar - Tigeladas and Palha de Abrantes.
