The Trofa is a recent county, but its history is born well before the constitution of nationality.

The morphological diversity of the territory allowed the populations to establish themselves throughout history.

It is believed that one of the earliest known quotations is included in a deed of the monastery of Moreira (Maia) dating from 979, this document refers to Alvarelhos (Alvarelios), São Cristovão do Muro (sanctum cristoforum) and Cedões (Zadones - in Santiago de Bougado).

There are countless testimonies from prehistoric times, from the axes of Abelheira to the engravings of Monte de S.Gens, passing through the lithic material found in the old Railway Station and the mamoas of S.Pantaleão and Alvarelhos.

In Roman times the territory of the county of Trofa was crossed by a structuring road for the administration of that time and that bequeathed two testimonies of exception; the Castro de Alvarelhos and the Marcos Miliários (classified as National Monuments).

The goodness of their lands continued to attract the population (this is evidenced by the news of findings dating from the Visigothic period), translated into the existence of large agricultural houses, many of them contributing to the preservation of small nuclei of a markedly rural character that maintains the cultural identity of the county.

Trofa was elevated to the town on May 16, 1984 and the city by law no. 29/93 of July 2, 1993. It became an autonomous municipality on November 19, 1998, due to the detachment of the neighboring municipality of Santo Tirso (simultaneously with the municipality of Odivelas, created at the same time, by detachment from Loures.

The city of Trofa is located between Porto and Braga. An important factor for its growth was the implementation of the railway station in the early twentieth century.
