Flat and open to the Atlantic, the city of Póvoa de Varzim is located 28 km north of Porto and is easily accessible, thanks to the proximity of the international airport Sá Carneiro (18km) and the road and rail network that serves it, counting also with a port for recreational vessels.
The origins of the settlement of Póvoa de Varzim date back to around 200,000 BC, during the lower Paleolithic period.
This municipality is one of the richest in historical terms, due to the amount of findings that prove the presence of several pre-Romanesque and post-Romanesque peoples. These peoples settled because this city is located in one of the best Portuguese natural ports, which allowed maritime trade and the development of fishing arts, which consequently made this region one of the most populated in northern Portugal.
Today this municipality is well known in terms of tourism, due to its magnificent beaches, environmental quality and nightlife, where you can find a large number of beach bars and the illustrious Casino da Póvoa.
A city with a contemporary look and older neighborhoods, Póvoa de Varzim enjoys rich fishing cuisine and maintains old traditions, such as abbreviations from the Portuguese people or masseiras. It is one of the few areas of legal gambling in Portugal and has significant textile and food industries
