Penafiel is an ancient land in the heart of the old Entre-Douro-e-Minho.
It has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by dozens of megalithic monuments and some settlements. There are also castrejos sites, such as Monte Mozinho (Oldrões / Galegos).
This municipality had important interregional, terrestrial and fluvial communication routes, playing a central role in supporting the transit of passengers and goods since the Middle Ages.
Today we find a set of cultural and landscape elements that are worth to be visited by those who enjoy history and the environment.
Talking about the gastronomy of Penafiel is an adventure of flavors that must be known, by all and especially by lovers of good food. Here the stars are the roasted kid in the wood oven, accompanied by roasted potatoes and oven rice; the bazulaque, made with kids of kid; tarts from S. Martinho, exclusive recipe consisting of a thin puff pastry stuffed with minced meat and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon; and the famous Lampreia rice in the fashion of Entre-os-Rios.
