Quinta dos Bispos was created between 1552 and 1572 by the Bishop of Porto D. Rodrigo Pinheiro. Its aim was to create a place of rest, entertainment and recreation for the bishop and his successors. The forest, the Leça river, the branches, the multiple fountains, waterfalls, chapels, chapels and sculptural elements that he had built, as well as the magnificent house contributed significantly to the success of the project. During the following centuries, the bishops of Porto found a welcoming refuge there. And with them, some of the most outstanding men of letters and arts of their times entered the farm. Here are some examples: D. Rodrigo da Cunha, Manuel Faria e Sousa, Friar Bartolomeu dos Mártires or Friar Luís de Sousa.
Between 1741 and 1752, the famous Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni was responsible for a series of interventions at the Quinta, commissioned by Bishop D. José Fonseca and Évora. This is how, among other architectural elements, the beautiful Baroque entrance facing Largo da Igreja appears.
Unfortunately this is one of the few elements that can be contemplated since since 1939, after several decades of abandonment, plunder and destruction, it has been transformed into a penal colony, being inaccessible to the public.
