The origin of what is currently the main municipal public park in Matosinhos goes back to the installation in this place, in 1481, of the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição of the Order of S. Francisco. Primitively installed, since 1392, in the S. Clemente das Penhas Oratory (next to the current Chapel of Boa Nova), “in a rough navy: the most uncultivated, open and sterile” as reported in 1666 Fr. Manoel da Esperança. The wild nature of the site led, some decades later, to the attempt to transfer the scene to a more pleasant place, having chosen the old “Quinta da Granja”.
Little remains of the original convent. Sold at public auction after the extinction of religious orders in 1834, all the vast heritage it housed was disappearing. Currently, the old cloister of the convent, some monumental fountains and the chapel of S. Francisco are still visible, where Frei João da Póvoa, former confessor of King D. João II and main driver of the construction of the new convent, is buried. But the most emblematic piece is the magnificent Manueline-style portal that belonged to the church of the convent and which, after mid-century. XIX having been transferred to a private farm in Vila Nova de Gaia, it was later returned to its original location.
In the century. XX Quinta da Conceição, which adjoined the banks of the river Leça, comes into possession of the Administration of the Ports of Douro and Leixões with a view to the construction of dock nº2 of the Port of Leixões. In 1956 the remaining property was leased by the Tourism Commission of the Municipality of Matosinhos for the creation of the “Parque da Vila”, undergoing during the 60's important improvements coordinated by the architect Fernando Távora, where the tennis court and the swimming pool stand out ( by architect Siza Vieira).
