Casa de Santiago was built by João Santiago de Carvalho e Sousa, for his residence in the last decade of the 19th century. It was then called “Quinta de Villa Franca” in an allusion to the place where he was.

The author of the project was Nicola Bigaglia, a Venetian living in Portugal since the 1880s. The house adopts an eclectic and revivalist architectural style, according to the taste of the time, integrating neo-medieval elements in a generic Renaissance tone that will characterize his later works.
The variety of structural and decorative elements, its expressiveness and its symbolism make this house an extremely interesting element of study. The house was acquired by the Municipality of Matosinhos in 1968 and its renovation and adaptation to a museum was directed by the architect Fernando Távora.
The visitor will be able to observe the reconstruction of an era through the possible approach to the interior of a bourgeois dwelling, installed in one of the most popular summer areas at the turn of the century, giving the Quinta de Santiago project a dimension of Casa Museu.
On the second floor there is a collection of painting and sculpture based on three prominent names from the Art collection of the Municipality of Matosinhos: António Carneiro (1872-1930), Agostinho Salgado (1905-1967) and Augusto Gomes (1910-1976 ). Being three figures linked to Matosinhos and Leça, the work of these three artists involves three different readings of the sea, the innermost land and the people of Matosinhos.
