When, in 1540, D. João III donated Mancelos to the religious of São Gonçalo de Amarante, that locality became a center for the evangelizing action of the Amarantine preachers.

Since then, the monastery of the parish has become one of the most important monastic complexes for the Order of Cónegos Regrantes de Santo Agostinho, in particular. Due to the remains of the Romanesque structure, it is believed that the monastery was built in the 13th century.
One of the several paintings exhibited inside, in the chancel, may represent Bishop Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires.
