They leave from all corners of Europe, moved by faith, towards a single destination: the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Spain. Pilgrims from Santiago, as they are known, travel through Portugal with the same mission: to reach that place. Along the way, Amarante, an imposing northern land, gains prominence. The explanation is in the emblematic Ponte de São Gonçalo. It was the passage that, in the medieval context, facilitated the crossing of the Tâmega for many travelers - many of whom would therefore be pilgrims from Santiago. History confirms the facts - given the existence, at the time, of a hostel on each bank of the river.

And even today, that bridge - as well as the São Gonçalo Convent - are decisive: they are already great symbols of the Torres itinerary (one of the paths to Santiago de Compostela). If you are passing through Amarante, remember: the city, in addition to being a passage to Santiago, is, in itself, a destination not to be missed.
