Sousel is a Portuguese village located in the District of Portalegre, Alentejo region and Alto Alentejo sub-region, with 1,932 inhabitants (2011).
It is the seat of a municipality with an area of ??279.32 km² and 5 074 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 4 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipalities of Avis and Fronteira, to the east and south by Estremoz, to the southwest by Arraiolos and to the west by Mora.
The county's landscape varies between the magnificence of old and leafy cork oaks, the square of olive groves, the discipline of vineyards and the extensive agricultural fields. The massifs to the south of the Municipality, which are nothing more than one end of the so-called limestone massif of Estremoz, assume a particular charm: São Bartolomeu (374m), São Miguel (391m) and Caixeiro (454m). From these elevations, the horizon - framed to the south by the Serra d'Ossa and to the north by the Serra de São Mamede - covers the Alentejo plain dotted by various locations in the districts of Portalegre and Évora, reaching, on cleaner days, the very seat of District.
Add the fact that Sousel is a municipality with an agricultural aspect, where the tourist aspect has been growing gradually, without being corrupted by mass tourism, betting more and more on contact with the surrounding nature.
All architectural assets built that preserve cultural and civilizational significance are considered built cultural heritage. Visit the Municipality of Sousel and discover the diversity of our heritage - religious, military, civil, utilitarian and production -, without forgetting other elements and sets that, despite their autonomous character, contain a high symbolic and cultural level in themselves.
