Ponte de Sor is a Portuguese city in the District of Portalegre, in the Alentejo region and in the Alto Alentejo sub-region, with about 7000 inhabitants. It is the third largest city in the Portalegre District.
It is the seat of a municipality with an area of ??839.71 km² and 16,722 inhabitants, divided into 5 parishes. Ponte de Sor, located at a point of confluence of the north-south and east-west routes, was born and developed as a crossing point. Its historic nucleus is located next to Ribeira and Ponte, around the building of the old Paços do Concelho and the primitive Igreja Matriz (it collapsed at the end of the 19th century and was located in the square in front of the Municipal Market).
Ponte de Sôr is a pleasant city, located in the heart of the Alentejo, characterized by the lezírias do Sor, large cultivated fields that surround the city.
The bridges of interest are varied and include the Matriz and Misericórdia churches, the Capelinha dos Paços do Calvário, the Chapels of São Pedro and Santo António, São Sebastião or Senhor das Almas, or even other monuments such as the bridge over the river of Sor.
It is also worth visiting the Megalithic nucleus of Montargil or the Necropolis of Santo André, or the mills of Tramaga, or even enjoying the calm of the riverside area of ??Sor.
The surrounding nature is generous, highlighting the large Montargil Dam that attracts countless visitors.
