The São Vicente Caves were formed from a volcanic eruption that occurred in Paul da Serra. The exterior, exposed to very low temperatures, solidified quickly, while the interior continued to contain many gases that formed a series of lava tubes.
The caves were first discovered in 1885 by the local population and opened to the public on October 1, 1996.
