Santa Cruz
The Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz, dedicated to São Salvador, resulted from the recovery of the Capela das Almas in the 17th century. The initial construction was erected by D. Manuel I, at the request of João de Freitas, a member of the Casa Real.
This church has three naves, a Gothic and rose window and a Manueline-style bell tower crowned with the Cross of Christ. Inside, it is possible to observe baroque and neoclassical gilded altarpieces and traces of paintings on the pillars.
The Church of São Salvador is the second largest church in Madeira.
