Located in the north of the island of Madeira, the municipality of Porto Moniz has about 3000 inhabitants spread over a geographical area of ??80.40 km².
Porto Moniz has quick and comfortable access. The trip to the north coast is pleasant, where the green of the forest and the blue of the sea intertwine.
Coming from the north side (Funchal - Ribeira Brava - São Vicente - Porto Moniz), the first parish that will pass is Seixal, followed by Ribeira da Janela just before reaching the village of Porto Moniz.
If you choose the west side (Funchal - Ribeira Brava - Calheta - Porto Moniz), the first parish you will find is Achadas da Cruz, where you can take the local cable car to Fajã da Quebrada Nova, a Natura 2000 website.
Porto Moniz only became connected to the rest of the island after the Second World War, when the emblematic road that links Porto Moniz to the municipality of São Vicente was built. This road was literally dug into the hillside, and is occasionally crossed by waterfalls that run into the sea. This is considered one of the most beautiful roads in Madeira. For safety reasons, due to the fall of stones, there are now tunnels that shorten the distance, but still allow passage through the most emblematic places on the road.
