Built on the foundations of a primitive hermitage of the century. XV, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte was later enlarged due to the requirement of the cult and due to the increase in the number of faithful, but destroyed in 1748 by an earthquake.

Description

Completed in 1818, this beautiful church is the most important pilgrimage site in Madeira, with lively pilgrimages, namely on August 15th - the day of Nossa Senhora do Monte, the patron saint of Funchal.

This church preserves elegant chandeliers, an image of Nossa Senhora do Monte - venerated since the early settlement of the island -, beautiful pieces of jewelery from the 17th and 18th centuries and a statue and the tomb of Charles I of Habsburg, Austria's last emperor , exiled in Madeira in 1921.

Mass: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 18h | Wednesday at 8:30 | Saturday at 6pm / Sunday at 8am and 11am
