Monchique is a Portuguese village in the district of Faro, region and sub-region of the Algarve, with about 2 300 inhabitants.
It is the seat of a municipality with an area of ??395.30 km² and 6 045 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 3 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Odemira, to the east by Silves, to the south by Portimão, to the southwest by Lagos and to the west by Aljezur.
The houses have traditional Algarve architecture in the white walls, in the stonework, in the color patches of the doors and windows, although they show the typical skirt chimneys, so different from the coast.
The steep and narrow streets allow you to see new perspectives on the green hills at every step, showing a certain exoticism, enhanced by the presence of leggings and hydrangeas, fruit trees, evocative of gardens and orchards. It is justification for a long walk to discover a different corner of the Algarve.
Monchique deserves to be visited on foot, because to appreciate its charms it is necessary to go up and down streets, to look at vast horizons among houses, to discover small corners of light and tranquility. At the end there will be a memory of a mountain village with history and character to which you feel like returning.
