Vila Nova de Poiares is located in the center of Portugal, more precisely in the district of Coimbra between the mountains of Carvalho, São Pedro Dias and Magarrufe as well as the rivers Alva and Mondego.
In administrative terms, it borders the municipalities of Coimbra, Miranda do Corvo, Lousã, Gois, Arganil and Penacova.
The remnants of settlement in this territory date back to Prehistory, more specifically to the Neolithic period, between the years 5,000 and 2,000 BC At the top of the Serra de São Pedro Dias we find a Dolmen that bears witness to it, which is a classified monument of national interest .
The Romans also left their mark. There are records that give us an account of a Roman bridge in place of “Murcella”. This was one of the most important routes that connected Coimbra to Bobadela, near Oliveira do Hospital.
Vila Nova de Poiares has landscapes of great beauty, not only mountain but river, of which the Mondego and Alva rivers are an example, perfect for the practice of nature and adventure sports such as river descents, canoeing or sport fishing.
If you prefer more radical activities, you can take advantage of the countless trails and paths of our territory, for mountain biking and off-road motor sports, or simply for a walk / run through the different routes that exist in the municipality.
They are attractions that will certainly make a difference for those who like sports and contact with nature.
