The human occupation of the current municipality of Mira dates back hundreds of thousands of years. There are ancient signs and traces of human life that date back to very ancient times, which can be integrated in the Ancient Paleolithic, as well as simple instruments of carved stone. It can even be said, due to the archeological sites detected and their characteristics, that during the Paleolithic there was an intense occupation of the Region.
Mira belongs administratively to the Centro Region, more specifically to the district of Coimbra. This region in the national geographic framework is located on the coastal strip between the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto. From the point of view of the current organization of the central region, the municipality of Mira is integrated in the grouping of municipalities in the Baixo Mondego Sub-region, together with Cantanhede, Coimbra, Condeixa-a-Nova, Figueira da Foz, Montemor-o -Old, Penacova and Soure.
The municipality is also an integral part of a vast area that encompasses the Ria de Aveiro and which constitutes the so-called Association of Ria Municipalities (AMRIA), as well as the natural region of Gândara, which extends between the basins of the Vouga and Mondego rivers, being also part of the association of the municipalities of Baixo Mondego and Gândara.
It is limited by the municipality of Vagos to the north, south and east by the municipality of Cantanhede and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. It occupies an area of ??124.1 km2 and consists of 4 parishes: Mira, Praia de Mira, Carapelhos and Seixo.
The population of the municipality of Mira is made up of 12872 inhabitants, who are mainly located in the North-East strip, generating a dense occupation there, in contrast to the coastal strip. The population density of the municipality is 104 Hab. / Km2.
It is about 40 km from Coimbra, 16 km from Cantanhede, 15 km from Vagos, 29 km from Aveiro and 30 km from Figueira da Foz.
