They clearly show characters from the Castro culture, although strongly romanized at the beginning of the Christian era. Martins Sarmento, famous ethnologist and archaeologist, born in Guimarães in 1833, took care of the scientific study of these ruins, having made a decisive contribution to their dissemination, study and state of conservation.
The numerous constructions, of various types, arranged a little freely, but obeying, however, to a still insipient urban scheme, offer impressive and very objective clues for the knowledge of those so remote people, reached at the top of the hills and yet protected by several waists of walls, whose extensive cloths can still be admired today.
The archaeological remains of these ruins are on display, in Guimarães, at the Archaeological Museum of the Martins Sarmento Society.
