Dating from the mid-18th century, Quinta de Vila Flor represents an important patrimonial value, in which gardens assume a fundamental role as a legacy in terms of the landscape design of Portuguese art. In the parish memories made for Portuguese Chorography, in the mid-18th century, the gardens of the Vila Flor Palace deserved a particular description without parallel with another house in Guimarães.

As it is a unique case, in terms of the transposition into the civil architecture of the linear development route of the staircase, the set of the three large terraces framed by stone balustrades with pinnacles and statues connected by stairs, clearly suggests the staircase of the convent of S. Maria da Costa. These Gardens extended laterally to an orchard / vegetable garden area, integrated into the set of Quinta's recreational spaces.
In relation to the original layout, the gardens maintain their original design, in contrast to the garden area that was being distorted, until more recently it gave way to municipal nurseries. The established program of rehabilitation of the Palace and the construction of a cultural center allowed to liven up the whole area, enhancing the use of outdoor spaces. It was therefore an opportunity for the requalification of the entire heritage set as well as its respective animation, a fact of great interest at local and regional level.
