The construction of the church and the Convento do Carmo began in 1685, and is evidence of the Baroque style. The convent was dedicated to Santa Teresa, its founder is unknown.

At the beginning of 1700, a papal bull authorized the retreats of Santa Teresa to take the veil of barefoot Carmelite religious, already under the invocation of St. Joseph. However, the main altar was occupied by the image of Nossa Senhora do Carmo - invocation most common and known.
The body of the church is divided from the chancel by a stone arch, and is enriched by two side altars: that of the Gospel, dedicated to Saint Anne; that of the Epistle, Nossa Senhora do Carmo. In the old choir there is yet another altar, dedicated to the Lord Dead, modernly erected by particular initiative and devotion.
With the official extinction of religious orders, the Church and the Convent came into possession of the State, with use for military purposes. From 1862, the building started to house the current Lar de Santa Estefânia.
