The origins of the church go back to a small chapel, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Consolação, built in March 1576. In October 1785 the new church is completed, an example of baroque spatiality in Guimarães, where two towers were added to the front for a century then, as well as the staircase and the balustrade. During the 19th century, Casa do Despacho and the Chapel of Senhor dos Passos were built, attached to the church.

The cult of Nossa Senhora da Consolação determined the canonical erection of the Brotherhood, in December 1594, by Friar Agostinho de Jesus. In 1878, she was awarded by King Dom Luís I with the title of Real Irmandade and prerogatives of Capela Real. The church and oratories of Nossa Senhora da Consolação and Santos Passos were classified in 1993 as a property of public interest.
