The Historic Center of Guimarães constitutes a unique vestige of a particular type of city design, which had its own evolution, due to the morphology of its medieval urban fabric, which forms a succession of squares of great formal value and environmental quality as well as, of a particular type of construction, typologically diversified, but with a large formal unity as a whole, built entirely with traditional construction techniques, and designated as rotating ram and rammed earth.
This unique asset that UNESCO classified on December 13, 2001 is the most reproductive and lasting investment in the city. The most profitable for the city is what is unique about it, and the world recognizes it.
The UNESCO Committee inscribed the Historic Center of Guimarães on the World Heritage List, based on the following criteria:
Guimarães is of considerable universal significance, insofar as specialized building construction techniques were developed here during the Middle Ages, which were later exported to Portuguese ascolonies, in Africa and in the New World, becoming even essential characteristics.
Guimarães' history is closely associated with the establishment of Portuguese national identity and Portuguese language in the 12th century.
Guimarães, an exceptionally well-preserved city, reflects the evolution of some private buildings from medieval times to the present, with particular emphasis between the 15th and 19th centuries.
