Located in the northern part of mainland Portugal, and about 50 km from the coast, the municipality of Amares is located in the district of Braga and NUT III1 - Cávado. With an approximate area of ??82 km2.
The western Minho is characterized, roughly, by a series of mountainous elevations (Serra Amarela, Serra do Gerês and Serra da Cabreira) with a Southwest - Northeastern direction strongly carved by the main rivers there, namely the Lima and Cavado rivers.
The municipality of Amares borders the municipalities of Braga to the south, Vila Verde to the northwest and Terras de Bouro to the north (all belonging to NUT III - Cávado) and those of Póvoa de Lanhoso and Vieira do Minho to the southeast ( belonging to NUT III - Ave). The boundaries of the municipality are closely linked to the typical features of the relief.
Thus, the entire southern part of the municipality is limited by the indentation exercised by the Cávado River, while the northern part is limited by the Homem River (tributary of the Cávado). The limit of the county to the North is exercised by the altitude due to the proximity of the Serra do Geres. Amares also belongs, and together with the municipalities of Barcelos, Braga, Esposende, Vieira do Minho, Vila Verde and Terras de Bouro, the Association of Municipalities of Vale do Cavado.
Known for its oranges and the excellent medicinal waters of the Caldelas hot springs. Ancient land, associated with the nobility and distinguished knights, contains a set of manor houses and monasteries of the Cistercian order, which have also made it rich in gastronomy. Noteworthy are the sarrabulho porridge with rockets and the orange pudding, which are a delicacy for visitors.
With regard to handicrafts, we emphasize wrought iron (lamps, appliques, etc.), work with wool (socks, blankets and bedspreads), basketry, painted ceramics and paintings on bark of trees and fruits .
