Oficina da Formiga was born in 1992 with the roof of a 1915 Gandares house in Ílhavo, and the installation of the oven and manual painting benches. As a result of the influence of masters and technicians, artisanal experimentation, experience in industrial management and also as a trainer in the ceramic sector, Jorge Saraiva and his wife Milú continued to reproduce the motifs and colors still registered in his memory.

Ílhavo
The pieces of Oficina da Formiga are faithful reproductions of the shapes and motifs of utilitarian crockery, manufactured in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century from several national industrial units that have already closed, namely from Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisbon, Sacavém, Caldas da Rainha and Gaia. They are utilitarian objects that respond to everyday needs (dishes for food and meals), but, in their use, we can again capture the wonderful memories of popular potteries.
Some pieces are loaded with symbolism - as is the case with the plate of abundance - and are pieces of popular history that we don't want to miss. The motifs are based on natural and traditional elements, fish, birds, flowers and folklore, decorated in private houses, antique shops, old-fashioned fairs, books and museums. The shapes are mainly the plates, dishes, jars and bowls. Conformation, painting and glazing processes are manual, with the same techniques used since the 19th century.
