Consecrated to San Salvador, the current church dates from the end of the 18th century (inaugurated in 1785) and is thought to be preceded by a temple also devoted to San Salvador since the 13th century.

At the time, it was considered the best in the bishopric of Aveiro and indelibly marks the configuration of the urban center of the city, next to Jardim Henriqueta Maia. His works were sponsored almost entirely by the people, except for the chancel, which was paid for by the prior.
